Most water heater problems come from a handful of parts: a thermocouple or igniter on gas units, heating elements or thermostats on electric units, and scale or sensors on tankless units. Many are repairable. A leak from the tank body is not. We tell you which you have before any work starts.

Signs you need water heater repair

Start with what you notice. Each of these signs points to a different part, and some are more urgent than others.

  • On gas units, often a pilot, thermocouple or igniter. On electric, often a tripped breaker, element or thermostat.
  • A leaking valve or fitting is repairable. A leak from the tank body means replacement.
  • Usually a worn thermocouple or a dirty pilot assembly. Both are common gas repairs.
  • A failed lower element on electric tanks, or sediment build-up, cuts the hot water you get.
  • Sediment on the tank bottom. A flush can help if the tank is not too far gone.
  • Leave the house and call your gas or propane supplier's emergency line first.
  • Often scale, a flame sensor or a venting problem. Write the code down before you call.
  • Pressure or temperature is too high, or the valve has failed. Call promptly.

We check the relief valve, venting and gas connections before we leave.

What affects the price

Repair costs depend on the part that failed and how easy it is to reach. Most common repairs cost far less than a new water heater. If the tank is old or the repair is close to the cost of replacing it, we tell you so. Your $80 on-site estimate is credited toward the work.

Local water and the seasons

Repair calls pick up when the weather turns cold. Colder incoming water makes every water heater work harder, and a weak element or worn thermocouple often gives out on the first cold snap. If your hot water has been getting less reliable through the fall, it is worth a look before winter.

On private wells, which many valley and shoreline homes use, sediment and hard water are behind a lot of repair calls. In homes where hot water comes from a boiler-fed indirect tank, tell us when you call, since the problem may be on the boiler side instead of the tank.

Common Questions

Why do I suddenly have no hot water?

On a gas water heater, the most common cause is a pilot light that went out, often because of a worn thermocouple. On an electric water heater, check the breaker first, then suspect a failed element or thermostat. On a tankless unit, look for an error code on the display and note it before calling.

Who repairs water heaters near Chester, CT?

Guild Water Heater Experts repairs gas, electric and tankless water heaters in Chester and across the CT Shoreline and River Valley, including Middletown, New Haven and New London. We hold Connecticut heating and plumbing licenses, so gas valves, burners and water piping are all within our work.

Is it worth repairing an old water heater?

It depends on age and the repair. On a tank under 8 years old, replacing a thermocouple, element or valve is usually worth it. On a tank over 10 years old, a major repair often buys little time. A leak from the tank body always means replacement. We give you both options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Turn off the cold water supply valve on top of the tank. For gas units, turn the gas control to off. For electric units, switch off the breaker. Then call us. A leak from a valve or fitting is often repairable, but a leak from the tank body means it needs replacing.

Leave the house right away without switching lights or appliances on or off. From outside, call your gas utility or propane supplier's emergency line, or 911. Do not go back in until they say it is safe. Once the leak is dealt with, we can repair the water heater.

Sediment has built up on the bottom of the tank. Water trapped under it boils and pops as the burner or element heats. A flush can help if the tank is not too old. On older tanks, heavy sediment can mean the tank is close to the end of its life.

The temperature and pressure relief valve opens when pressure or temperature in the tank gets too high. Dripping can mean the valve is worn, the temperature is set too high, or pressure is building because there is no expansion tank. It is a safety part, so have it checked promptly.

Yes. Common tankless problems include scale build-up, flame sensor faults, ignition failures and venting errors. Write down any error code on the display before you call. Many tankless problems trace back to skipped descaling, so we often descale the unit as part of the repair.

We repair gas, electric, propane and tankless water heaters. Parts availability varies by model and age, and some older units have parts that are hard to find. When you call, tell us the brand and the model number from the label if you can see it, so we can check parts.
